The Man Who Lived on his Bike

I just love this video, everything about it: the music, the young man dedicating it to his father, eating breakfast on the bike, beeping the horn on the steering wheel, being Zorro on the bike, playing violin on the bike.  Aaarrrggghhhh!

Training

Wow!  Just subletted my apartment for June, July and August.  So psyched!!  Can take my time on this adventure, no pressure to get anywhere at anytime...I love that.  I may even wash dishes in the UP for awhile, haha.  It just means I can stop and stay somewhere if I am having fun.  Yeahhhhh!

I'm finishing my second week of training.  Upping the mileage by 10% every week.  Per training guru Joe Friel, every 3rd day is a recovery day and every 3rd week is a recovery week.  10 weeks of training, the last one being tour week.  June 4 is start date...Reed, get ready, haha.  I am counting on you to get me to Duluth!

Oh, I got my new cycling shoes...Bontrager mountain bike with SPD pedals.  They clip in and out so easily, they're awesome.  My speed averages 2mph more with them, so great!  A big shout out to Natalia at the West Bank Hub who helped me with them, she is so cool.

Let me know if you would like a tshirt...sales are good...ordering more smalls.

More soon!!!!

T-shirts!

Hi everyone,

Tshirts are ready!!  They're pretty cute...picture/drawing of 3 vintage black bikes on the front, and on the right sleeve, "Shut Up and Ride".  Haha.  All sizes, in royal blue, bright green (which many women are liking), ice grey, and light teal.  $15.

Am working on my training schedule today...will start to build April 1, hopefully.  Twisted my ankle yesterday, trying to lay low for a few days...do not like that!

I am also thinking of subletting my apartment for the summer...let me know if you know of anyone.

Starting to get really excited now!  Thanks for your support!

Planning. . .

Hey Everyone,

This is the first posting of A Fool's Journey...bike trip from St. Paul to NYC.  It came about because of my love for biking, wanting to do something exciting in my new "retirement" from corporate america - yay!!!!!, and the desire for an adventure.  I chose New York as a destination because I lived there for many years and have been wanting to visit.  The date has been tentatively set for June 11, 2012.  Six to seven crazy weeks of biking!  I am so psyched for this adventure, even in these very early planning stages!  With this bike trip, I hope to inspire everyone to get up and move a little more!

I started riding last summer.  The first half of the summer I put a lot of miles on my old Schwinn.  I felt like it was time to upgrade.  When I picked up my Long Haul Trucker, and rode it away from the shop, my buddy, Reed, chided me, "Fool, get out of that granny gear!" I did and then rode 2,000 miles in 4 months.

I just rode and rode and loved it more each day.  John F. Kennedy once said that there is nothing quite like the simple pleasure of riding a bike.  For me, it is a simple pleasure and the best part of my day.  Everything just gets better when I get on my bike.  I appreciate the world around me, I get to see the world from my bike and I get to interact with that world, in a way that you never would from a car.  Not long ago my daughter, Emma, asked me, "Mom, remember when you were normal, and just rode your bike once in awhile?"  We both had a good laugh over that one!

Jacque from Solidago Riders recently helped me so much in planning a route and with such great practical information for the trip.  Thank you so much, Jacque!

In the near future, I will be selling some really fine t-shirts as a fundraiser, a must-have, haha!

I'll post again soon!
